The easiest route is the black route. It is 5 miles long.
the Black Route is from Mill Yard to Kentmere Village Hall, (as per Green Route), then returning to Stavely Mill Yard by bus.
The easy route is the green route. It is 10 miles long and ascends 466m.
From Staveley Mill Yard, turn right along Back Lane and right again at village hall onto Kentmere valley road, past the weir to Scroggs bridge. Continue left along Brow Foot Lane (signed) to Brow Foot Farm. Take path right to river then Ullthwaite bridge, left onto Croft Head then straight on up track, crossing ford and on to Meadowplatts plantation. Cross over, then join the bridleway from the left, go by stepping stones, right through gate follow the track with the wall on the right, round Whiteside end by Hallwood, past the disused quarry, onto Kentmere Hall right up to church and village hall, (toilets, food and check in). Continue downhill past church. Just over low bridge turn sharp left and up the steep hill (right at T junction) to Green Quarter Fell. Swing left up hill. At the end of tarmac, take the footpath to Longsleddale, up at first then across to meet the Longsleddale bridleway at gate in wall corner. Turn right (south) and follow the wall up to Cocklaw Fell. On descent, cross fence by stile and meet main path. Right through gate following wet track across Green Quarter Fell. At ruined barn , keep left on path to gate in wall corner at Birk Rigg. Through gate and follow path along and then down to big gate and track leading to Park House and tarmac road. Follow the lane all the way down to Barley Bridge. Retrace your steps back to the Mill Yard (finish).
The route for intermediate walkers is the red route. It is 13 miles long and ascends 765m.
From Staveley Mill Yard turn right along Back Lane and right again at village hall onto Kentmere valley road, past the weir to Scroggs Bridge. Continue left along Brow Foot Lane (signed) to Brow Foot farm. Take path right to river and then Ullthwaite Bridge, left onto Croft Head and straight on up track, crossing ford and onto Meadowplatts plantation to junction with bridleway by the stepping-stones. Turn right through gate and after 100m follow markers north uphill to stile, by gate, in fence. Follow old quarry track (markers) to disused quarry workings and continue northwest to wall (approx 400m) to join footpath on right of wall and follow this until it descends to a gate on the Garburn Pass road. Follow the road, right hand bend, through gate and then down into Kentmere following track and then tarmac road at first houses, to church and village hall (toilets, food and check in). Continue downhill past church and down hill. Just over low bridge turn sharp left and up the steep hill (right at T junction) to the Green Quarter Fell. Swing left up hill. At end of tarmac take the footpath to Longsleddale, up at first and then across to meet the Longsleddale bridleway at gate in wall corner. Turn right (south) and follow the wall up to Cocklaw Fell. Through gate and follow path along and then down to big gate and track leading to Park House and tarmac road. Follow lane all the way down to Barley Bridge. Retrace your steps back to the Mill Yard (finish).
The route for advanced walkers is the blue route. It is 20 miles long and ascends 1,440m.
Blue Route is for experienced walkers, with compass & Ordnance Survey 1:25 scale map. Walkers must be experienced in navigation in bad weather conditions.
From Staveley Mill Yard turn right along Main Street and right again at village hall onto Kentmere valley road, past the weir to Scroggs Bridge. Continue left along Brow Foot Lane (signed) to Brow Foot farm. At the sharp bend take left turn on the fell path, a wall appears on right- follow this north crossing at wall corner-continue keeping to the wall, trodden paths across Yoke to cairn. Go down and up to Ill Bell (cairn), down and up to Froswick (cairn), then down along ridge crest. Keep left on main path to new track to check point on the main track to High Street. At Thornthwaite beacon turn east to roman road. When you reach the wall swing right along path east to Mardale Ill Bell, take south east path to Nan Bield pass (shelter). Continue east along path up Harter Fell to cairn and fence. Turn right & follow fence south over the Knowe, Kentmere Pike. Continue south east on path keeping left to stile over wall by the fence, then up to Shipman Knots (cairn). Follow path by wall south to junction with stile end to Sadgill track, through gate and follow wall south, Cocklaw Fell, over stile by fence, to meet main path. Right through gate following wet track across Green Quarter Fell. At ruined barn, keep left on path to gate in wall corner at Birk Rigg. Through gate and follow path along and then down to big gate and track leading to Park House and tarmac road. Follow lane all the way down to Barley Bridge. Retrace your steps back to the Mill Yard (finish).
